High-Fiving Mark Pryor

No Labels is high-fiving Senator Mark Pryor for noting the absurdity of the current budget process and calling for reform.

“The budget process is not working around here,” Pryor said. “We need to get back to the fundamentals of governing which is to do a budget. And I think the Budget Act is just not working anymore. I think we need to rewrite the Budget Act.”

The budget process is certainly broken – as Congress has passed a budget and spending bills on time only four times in the last 60 years. Today, senators took to the floor, talking about five budget resolutions that had no chance of passing. Now that these bills failed, there will likely be no further progress on budget resolutions this year. It’s like a golfer whiffing on his first tee shot five times, walking off the course and claiming he just played a great round.

The congressional budget process needs to be fixed -- that’s something everyone, from Democrats, to Independents, to Republicans, can agree on. One of our ideas to fix what’s broken is No Budget, No Pay, which would suspend congressional pay if budget and spending bills aren’t time. And if these bills were late, members couldn’t get back their lost pay either.

But what do you think, are there other ideas besides No Budget, No Pay that Congress should consider to fix our broken budget process? Leave a comment below.
