High-Fiving the Senate for showing how legislation can pass

No Labels is high-fiving the bipartisan process the U.S. Senate went through to pass a postal reform bill today.

The bill, brought to the floor by Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Susan Collins (R-ME), Tom Carper (D-DE) and Scott Brown (R-MA), would restructure the postal service and save it from bankruptcy. It passed 62-37 with solid bipartisan support.

This bill serves as a benchmark for how bipartisan bills can be handled on the Senate floor and how the amendment process can work along the way. Making legislation, like making sausage, can be messy, as the old saying goes -- but this time, the senators hammered out their differences, considering 39 amendments and approving 19.

The Post Office has an impact on each and every state -- just like the federal debt and deficit. It’s not likely Congress will address America’s fiscal future before the November election -- but eventually it will have to find some solutions. This bill can be used as a model for any serious attempt to push real legislation through Congress in the coming months.
