No Labels In The News

WASHINGTON — Our nation faces some daunting challenges. Congress no longer seems capable of solving the very real problems facing America. Before every election, we hear candidates make campaign promises to fix our tax system, revise our immigration laws, improve our schools and address our budget problems. But after every election, these promises are crushed under the weight of poisonous rhetoric and partisan posturing. We have had enough.

Last week, columnist Jon Ralston slammed Sen. Dean Heller for his sponsoring of the No Budget, No Pay Act, which would suspend congressional member pay if budget and spending bills weren’t passed on time. Ralston thinks No Budget, No Pay is a cynical gimmick. He’s wrong.

Jon Ralston’s recent column criticizing “No Budget, No Pay” legislation was strong on rhetoric but weak on substance. He proposed no ideas for reforming Congress, only condemning Sen. Dean Heller’s bipartisan effort to get Congress to finish its budget work on time. Any mule can kick a barn down; it takes a carpenter to build one. Sen. Heller is trying to be a carpenter.

The group held a meeting at the University of New England's Portland campus that featured Angus King, the independent former governor now running for Senate, and Eliot Cutler, the independent who nearly won the 2008 gubernatorial race.

"No Labels.org" has released the results of a poll of Maine voters showing 92 percent support the No Budget, No Pay Act.

Former U.S. Sen. George V. Voinovich, an Ohio Republican, tonight will conduct a town hall teleconference to discuss solutions to the nation's dysfunctional budget process.

Voinovich will join members of No Labels, a bipartisan government reform group, in advocating a so-called "No Budget, No Pay" bill that would withhold pay from members of Congress until they pass a new federal budget.

This week, No Labels, the Boston College chapter of a national organization dedicated to creating change in the American government, co-sponsored Rock the Vote week. No Labels was seen on campus publicizing their group, informing students about the organization, and handing out free pins, stickers, and t-shirts as a part of the Rock the Vote campaign.

I was pleased that Norman Ornstein, one of America’s foremost Congressional reform experts, gave credibility in his recent Roll Call article to most of No Labels’ 12-point Make Congress Work! action plan. The goal of No Labels, a bipartisan group, is to get government back on track by adopting 12 simple reforms that would break the gridlock and hyperpartisanship in Congress.
