Washington gridlock has led to a lot of ideas for reform. Some have just a little bit of crazy attached to them -- like putting two presidents in the White House. Just goes to show America is desperate for change.

When Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) announced her retirement, former Gov. Angus King (I-ME) decided to jump into the fray. While both parties are trying to get in touch with King to find out who he would caucus with if elected, the former two-term governor is not giving anything away.

As GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Obama turn their eyes to the general election, things will get ugly. They've got the money, and they've got the willpower to go personal and play dirty. John Heileman writes: "If you thought the Republican nomination tussle was sickeningly, deplorably, appallingly brutish, I have just five words of advice: Avert your eyes now, people." The Senate Parliamentarian decided that last summer's deal on the debt ceiling and spending caps does not preclude the Senate from taking up other budget resolutions this year. The POLITICO story says: "The ruling could force vulnerable Democrats to cast tough votes that hurt them in November, a situation Reid and other leaders are eager to avoid as they work to protect their fragile majority." Seriously?!

President Obama and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) are talking numbers. But are their budgets proposals leading to substantive debate about our fiscal priorities, or just political posturing in advance of an election?

The Senate has started to take strides toward finding solutions. Smaller pieces of legislation such as a congressional ethics bill and a small-business jobs bill or confirmation of some presidential nominees -- all passed with large bipartisan majorities. While this legislative action will not break Washington gridlock, it could be a good first step.

Looks like America will get a two-week break from gridlock. After a nearly botched transportation bill, budget intrigue and recess appointments on presidential nominees, Congress is taking a two-week recess. This is the first time in a year Congress is taking a break without holding largely ceremonial pro forma sessions.

"On Wednesday, in a move reflecting long-term disillusionment and in an effort to shake up the campaign, [San Diego mayoral candidate Nathan] Fletcher said he is leaving the Republican Party. He is becoming an independent. In his announcement video, he railed against the strategy he saw in both parties — the unwillingness to negotiate with the other side to keep it from being able to take credit for any accomplishment."
