Rally to Make Government Work!

On July 18, 2013, citizens from across the country descended on Capitol Hill to watch as more than 70 members of Congress — the No Labels Problem Solvers — unveil a legislative package of nine initiatives designed to make government more efficient and effective.

11:30 a.m.: Sen. Amy Klobuchar closed the event, thanking the Problem Solvers for their courage to work across the aisle and issuing a call to action to the crowd: To recruit more Problem Solvers!

11:22 a.m.: "We are not about checking our principles at the door. We are about listening to and respecting one another so we can work together to strengthen America," said Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard added: "We can only make progress in this country by working together in the spirit of aloha – with respect, sincerity, and with courage – finding real solutions to the challenges people face across our nation."

11:16 a.m.: Sen. Joe Manchin, No Labels co-chair, said: "No Labels is simply this: Putting our country above ourselves … We’re 81 strong, we talk to each other, not about each other. And that’s what it’s all about."

11:12 a.m.: "You all ought to be up here and we should be down there. This is your government. Ladies and gentleman, help is on the way," said Congressman Reid Ribble.

11:10 a.m.: Congresswoman Janice Hahn said, "Today is a new day that calls for new ideas, collaboration and real solutions for the American people … No Labels presents a pathway to breaking the partisan gridlock.”

11:05 a.m.: Michael Smerconish welcomes the Problem Solvers to the stage, while the crowd cheers. All the Problem Solvers stand to give a short statement on why they know Democrats and Republicans must work together to solve problem. Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) said, “We were sent to Washington to govern. Sometimes that means standing your ground and saying, “no.” More often, it means finding common ground and getting to “yes” so the country can move forward.”

9:40 a.m.: The No Labels team gets ready for the Rally to Make Government Work! at Upper Senate Park:
