WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2021 — During his Thursday CNN town hall in Baltimore, President Biden said, “We’re going to have to move to the point where we fundamentally alter the filibuster.” No Labels believes that any move toward the elimination of the Senate filibuster will undermine the President’s long-stated commitment to bipartisanship.
“It sends a horrible signal about his commitment to bipartisanship,” said No Labels Executive Director Margaret White. “As a senator, Joe Biden strongly supported the filibuster, once saying, ‘The Senate ought not act rashly by changing its rules to satisfy a strong-willed majority acting in the heat of the moment.’ He was right then, and he should do the right thing now.”
No Labels believes it is time for President Biden to demand an immediate vote on the infrastructure and jobs bill that passed the Senate with the votes of both parties, and to reach out to Republicans to test their willingness to find a two-party solution to deal with voting rights and our other challenges.
No Labels is a nationwide movement of Democrats, Republicans and independents working to build the bipartisan governing coalition capable of solving America’s toughest challenges.
